The Ohio Controlling Board approved 76 970 dollars in fees to Columbus attorney R Brooke Alloway for defending Gov. James A Rhodes in civil suits from the 1970 Kent State shootings. Board members voted 4 to 3 but signaled no further payments for appeals in the same case.
The National Center for Health Statistics reports a 19.3 per 1000 rate of divorce among married women 15 and older in 1974, the highest since World War II. Men’s rates are not tracked, but are presumed similar by health officials.
Seventy six commercial airline pilots backed by Ralph Nader petition the FAA to ban smoking in cockpits and to prohibit pilots and crewmembers from smoking for eight hours before flight. West Virginia Governor Arch Moore, a 53 year old Republican and long time political figure, goes on trial in U S District Court for extortion with former aide William Loy as co defendant. Prosecutors say Moore received 25000 from Theodore Price in exchange for a state bank charter that never issued. If convicted both defendants face up to 20 years in prison and fines up to 10000 each. The Supreme Court recently refused a stay on a state Supreme Court ruling affecting Moore’s eligibility to seek another term.
State Sen Meshel of Youngstown and Rep Wilkowski co chaired a joint Senate House Economic Conference. Meshel said a legislative committee study reaffirmed limited state options to solve Ohio’s economic problems with few recommendations.
City Council set for 7 30 pm in council chambers as Democrats push a conference to raise public awareness of Ohio's economy and spur faster legislative action. A four public hearing effort heard from 16 witnesses including officials bankers and chambers of commerce. Meshel urged ongoing discussion as a one term problem and proposed a blue ribbon economic advisory council to assist the legislature.

A side by side refrigerator fire early this morning caused about $2,500 damage to the Lyle Foss residence in Norwalk. Foss, his wife Rose, and his 91 year old father escaped after coughing due to heavy smoke. Firemen said a malfunctioning refrigerator motor started the blaze as the couple evacuated with their dog and Foss was treated for smoke exposure.
