On a Gulf of Mexico rig, 60 mph winds drove two survival capsules into 16-foot waves. One capsule survived with 16 men rescued alive at dawn. the second capsized, four bodies found, nine others inside. Survivors blamed panic and carelessness, while officials noted possible capsule damage.
In a night of gun battles in a Baltimore row house, 18 year old John Earl Williams killed Officer Jimme Halcomb and wounded others after a hour long siege. Williams surrendered after telephoning police and was charged with homicide and multiple assaults.
