Hunger strike ends at Cuyahoga jail after four days

William Bornman, 34, who had fasted four days in the Cuyahoga County Jail, ended the protest Tuesday night. He explained the stop was due to hunger, saying he was hungry, stupid. Bornman is charged in a June tavern holdup during which a Cleveland police officer was shot and wounded.

Tornado damages nursing home in Guthrie Oklahoma

A tornado struck a nursing home in Guthrie Oklahoma causing roof removal and a collapsed wall. Five of 83 elderly patients suffered minor injuries while two were kept for overnight observation. The owner praised the quick evacuation and safety. In Moscow Izvestia reported five American attaches and a Royal Canadian Air Force lookout were caught gathering intelligence near a Soviet shipyard in Leningrad. The Canadian embassy protested and a U S protest was expected.

Prison Riot In North Carolina Leaves Five Dead

Guards on rooftops fired into a courtyard of Central Prison Raleigh killing five inmates and wounding 78 others as convicts hurled torches and homemade spears. Eight doctors were summoned to treat the injured in the dawn hours amid crossfire exchanges.

The City of London announced that the 136 year old London Bridge was sold to a group of unnamed American buyers who plan to relocate it to a site in the United States. Britons reacted with dismay and irony about the sale.

New Norwalk bypass date eyed as work restarts

Project foreman Robert Dempsey of A J Baltes Inc predicted a July 1 opening for the Norwalk bypass with seeding guard rails and shoulder work unfinished. Winter damage must be repaired, Route 20 pavement remains, and signs are not yet installed. Meanwhile the Norwalk Charter Commission wraps a six week recess and reviews a home rule draft due April 30. Harvey Walker will meet with the panel May 9. United Buckingham Inc plans to exit Norwalk Aug 1 and may relocate to Denver, with no confirmed sale plans for the present building.

Norwalk Council OKs extra officer and juvenile post

Norwalk City Council adopted an emergency ordinance adding two police positions juvenile officer and lieutenant detective a 6 to 0 vote with dissent from G Ira Liedorff The plan hinges on state grant aid for juvenile divisions and would require 17 officers including a chief three captains a detective three sergeants and a radio operator Patrolman John Short is expected to be appointed under the measure The grant could cover up to 3000 with the city contributing 3500 Liedorff clashed with Louis Nardecchia over budget matters and juvenile delinquency remarks while Mayor Harold Finch and Service Director Morley Price defended the move saying younger officers help address juvenile crime

Bellevue youth receives six month sentence for probation violation

Roger E. Blarek, 22, of 413 Green Street Bellevue, was sentenced by Juvenile Court Judge Russell T. Antrim to six months in the Toledo House of Correction for probation violation after a Bellevue arrest on a driving while intoxicated charge.

Levy Endorsed By St. Paul Board For Norwalk Levy

The St. Paul School Board endorsed the five mill levy for Norwalk Public Schools to appear on May 7 1968 ballot. Eight board members signed a statement urging passage and stressing community development. Norwalk officials welcomed the move calling it commendable and helpful amid local debates on the levy.

Announce Cutback In Poverty Plans

Lack of funds shuts down the Neighborhood Youth Corps program in Erie County and eliminates the possibility of summer head start programs in Erie or Huron Counties this year. Director Emerson Cole told the bi county board that area projects lack funding, noting NYC has been closed since March 20 and no new funds are available. He said funds for anti poverty programs remain frozen at current levels.
