More than 100 applications have been received for Norwalk High coaching posts. Superintendent S R Corbin said notices were sent to 100 colleges in four states and most applicants are experienced coaches. A few with no experience may be considered for junior high posts, while teaching vacancies complicate coaching assignments.
John Funk of Willard was acquitted in Huron County Court after a hearing on a complaint by Mrs. Roselle Ward of the Huron County Humane Society. The case alleged Funk neglected two horses three ponies and a cow on his RD 1 Willard property.
Terry A. Baker a Milan welder and Joanne E. Barman of Bellevue factory worker apply for marriage. Fred E. McClaflin of Nova a dairy farmer and Cheryl Lee Coovert of Greenwich a homemaker also apply. Frances Peterson 80 formerly of Norwalk and George Cochran 75 of Willard are listed among deaths.
Erie-Huron Community Action Commission staff are assigned to the Norwalk CAC office in Huron County and will continue operating on a bi county basis. Huron County votes to disassociate from Erie County while board members may still serve their terms or resign after attendance rules.
The 127 acre site east of Norwalk city limits wins final approval as the Huron County Air wA pye location. The L shaped parcel lies south of U S 20 and west of Route 601 with frontage on both roads. Negotiations with landowners near Evans have been completed. the Evans property cost about 60 000 dollars.
The nationwide trucking shutdown continues with negotiators and federal mediators meeting in Washington D C amid uncertainty over a near term contract settlement. Local 20 leader Lawrence M Steinberg travels to the talks as Ford and GM adjust production due to parts shortages while tire makers brace for potential ripple effects nationwide.
Interstate Systems Inc announced the Norwalk relay station will close August 1 to cut costs if a Toledo facility is ready. Operations supervisor M M Noblett said the small facility is redundant with a new 51 mile away location. Some staff will transfer to Toledo and further layoffs affected 77 drivers who were recently laid off as seasonal.
Five area contractors bid about 30 000 dollars in electrical gear for the Milan substation. The package included a transformer two voltage regulators and two circuit reclosures. Engineer S W Kuhner had not yet determined a low bidder as bids were submitted separately for each item.
The Milan Board of Public Affairs seeks about a 20 percent water rate increase, to be decided by the village council tonight. The consulting engineer recommends Cantex Corp of Mineral Wells, Texas, for the sludge removal unit for Milan's new secondary sewage system. Bay Construction Co of Sandusky awaits federal approval to start building the plant.
Elizabeth Taylor won her second Academy Award for Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf as Martha while Paul Scofield led A Man for All Seasons to Best Picture. Fred Zinnemann earned best director. Sandy Dennis and Walter Matthau also triumphed.
A New York Central diesel engine flipped end over end after colliding with a semi at a Greenwich crossing. The truck driver was killed and a railway brakeman injured. Killed instantly was Claire E. Alford, 56, of New Castle, Pa. The train continued 1 500 feet before the front engine cartwheeled. Three train men survived. James Curtis was seriously hurt and hospitalized. Engineer W A Reams and fireman Ray P Allen were treated and released. Police Credit signals and a second approaching train for confusion at the crossing.
