Mayor Richard J. Daley wins an unprecedented sixth term with about 78 percent of the vote over John J. Hoellen, delivering the largest share of his career as he draws support citywide. The result cements Daley's long control of Chicago politics.
Heavy fighting erupts around Xuan Loc 38 miles northwest of Saigon as Communist forces sever Highway 1. Fearing collapse, Thieu convenes urgent military meetings while Premier Khiem resigns and refugees stream toward Saigon outskirts.
City officials and the Ohio Civil Service Employees Association reported a settlement after six months of talks. The union voted to accept 33 cents per hour with a future fair settlement hoped, retroactive to January 1, totaling about 20 000 dollars in a lump sum.
