To mark the High Holy Days a 10 day period ends with Yom Kippur services on Oct. 1 at Congregation B'nai Israel of Austin. Services begin 6 15 p m Sunday and Jewish New Year services follow Monday and Tuesday evenings.

Downtown weeds and a derelict Kedzie block raise safety concerns with a city crew promised to address the parkway and a tree on Potomac.
Thirty-two students from eight area high schools were named semifinalists in the 1968 69 National Merit Scholarship program. They rank among the nation’s top scorers on the qualifying test given in February and may compete for about 3000 merit scholarships next spring.
Federal funds have been approved to establish and operate a senior service center for residents in the area bounded by Western Ci cero Armitage and Belmont. The center at 3725 Fullerton will offer counseling legal health and volunteer programs to help seniors remain independent and avoid crises. Garfield Stensland named director with decades of aging services experience.
Logan Square YMCA hosts the fourth annual Free Week at 3600 Fullerton from Monday through Friday. Children in grades three through eight may attend from 3 to 6 pm to use gym facilities including trampoline, gymnastics, rope climbing, tumbling, basketball, rollerskating and other activities.
Neil V. Caldwell, cashier of the Capitol Bank of Chicago, Ci cero and Fullerton, has completed the first two weeks of a three year seminar at the University of Wisconsin graduate school of banking. The program aims to educate bankers on high standards of service for communities worldwide, with Caldwell also conducting yearlong extension work across all banking areas.
Barry Miller and Jim Psichalinos recount their August 1968 duties protecting Chicago during the Democratic National Convention. They describe 12 hour shifts, 7th district policing, and mobs of hippies, noting most bystanders were peaceful while a few agitators sparked injuries and arrests. They shrug off blame toward networks, calling the TV lights a factor in the heated scene.
The Humboldt Park Craft shop opens registrations on Sept 23 for youth and adult classes. Youth lessons run 3 30 to 5 30 pm with adult sessions at 7 pm daily. The facility supports cabinet making and small boat building up to 16 feet and will run winter programs for Junior Rainbow fleet and Fishing Conservation clubs. Registrations are now being accepted at Hermosa Park 2240 N Kilbourn for pre-school ballet tap modern dance modern jazz square and folk dances acrobatic dancing and tumbling. Classes run after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays for grammar school girls with preschool at 2 p.m. both days. High school girls take modern jazz and tumbling Tuesdays at 7 p.m. Kids will prepare for the Christmas Musical Santa's Toy Shop with all enrolled children participating. Logan Square Y outlines a broad fall program for men women and youth. The adult men schedule includes Monday volleyball 12 to 2 pm and a Monday 8 pm conditioning class. High school basketball league runs Tue and Thu at 7 pm. Open weight room 9 am to 9 pm daily. Youth programs feature swim instruction start Oct 4 with bus service, floor hockey and gym activities, and a wrestling club meets Tue Thu 7 pm. Teen rollerskating and open gym offered some evenings. A music school program and study center are planned with a teen employment service led by Pat Haak.
