Illinois Expands Consumer Protection with New Laws

Attorney General William G. Clark announces that his fraud unit has recovered 2,076,678 dollars for 52,715 Illinois consumers since 1961. A new package of consumer protection laws takes effect, doubling the unit’s activity and broadening controls on lending, advertising, down payments, debt collection, and installment contracts while mandating consumer education in schools.

New Law Sets Maximum On Credit Card Interest

New statutes cap monthly credit card interest at 144 percent of the average daily unpaid balance and require detailed cost statements for each billing period. Protection expanded to nonapplicants and nonbeneficiaries, with liability starting only after signing or using the card.

Big 1968 Spurt In Draft Calls

The year 1968 opens with large increases in draft calls for physicals and inductions as Vietnam combat intensifies. January requests total 466 physicals and 126 inductions across 11 area boards, about fifteen times the December physicals and near double the December inductions.

Board approves busing plan to ease crowded West Side schools

The district backed Superintendent Redmond's plan to bus students from overcrowded West Side schools. The board funded 150000 for transportation through January 29 and moved toward developing a non contiguous attendance area plan. Debate focused on racial implications and potential opposition at the January meeting.

Wingspread Plan Seeks Federal Grant for Student Exchanges

The Wingspread project seeks a 932,530 federal grant to exchange students between Chicago and suburban high schools plus elementary and junior high pupils. If approved, three week to year long programs would start next summer through 1969, with notable efforts at Austin Niles and West Side schools including a five week summer session and a moving classroom concept.
