Police report an 8.1 percent rise in crime in early 1968 versus 1967 with auto thefts up nearly 32 percent. Some districts show declines in index crimes from the previous period, while West-Northwest Side districts post sharp increases.
An eight week income tax clinic begins today at Logan Square YMCA 3600 Fullerton. Milton Vondorf a member of the Chicago and Illinois Bar associations will lead 90 minute sessions each Wednesday at 7 p.m. Topics include taxable income deductions exemptions and medical deductions with detailed discussion of losses and ways to legally save money on 1968 returns.
Adlai Stevenson III state treasurer and Democratic governor candidate will deliver the main address at 2 p.m. February 18 during the Northwest Community Organization sixth annual congress at Holy Trinity High School. About 600 delegates from 180 member groups are expected, with elections for new officers and votes on resolutions including building a replacement high school for Tuley High School as a top objective. Resolutions cover health education home financing housing and urban renewal priorities. A slate of 21 officers is nominated led by Ron Caronti as president and Rev. Calvin Kutler as first vice president among others.
Msgr. William Gorman pastor emeritus of Resurrection church and Chicago Fire Department chaplain died February 9 after a long illness. He served 46 years aiding firefighters, earning the nickname Father Bill. Requiem Mass was held at Resurrection church. interment at All Saints cemetery. Surviving are sisters Margaret and Hileen.
Secretary of State Paul Powell announced a revised Rules of the Road booklet reflecting 1967 legislative changes. The update preserves the 1967 format with new highway signs, expanded motorcycle chapter, added safety material, and updated art work. The Blackhawk Park Civic Council will meet at 7 30 p m February 21 at the park fieldhouse 2318 N Lavergne. A spokesman urged area businessmen to attend as plans discussed previously may move to operation. Regular monthly meetings are set for the third Wednesday each month with provision for emergency sessions if needed.
A Lowell PTA meeting will feature a panel on Community Change and Problems at 7 30 p m Tuesday in the school auditorium 3320 Hirsch. Panelists include Samuel Betances Division Urban Progress Sgt William Howe 14th police district Dr Ellen M Gonnelly Lowell principal Mrs Arthur Leon PTA president and Rev James White Lutheran churches community coordinator with moderator duties.
A Northwest Side youth club The Root at 3260 Armitage, run by Rev. Bruce Johnson, closed after a Feb. 5 gang clash involving Simon City and Bel-Airs youths. Police arrested 20, finding a shotgun and alcohol, with eight charged as inmates of a disorderly house and Rev. Johnson charged as keeper.
The first of three public hearings on James Redmonds district 4 busing plan will be held at Steinmetz High School Thursday night 7 p.m. The plan would bus 573 May and Spencer pupils to eight northwest side schools as opponents press for delay while supporters push for action.
Secretary of State Paul Powell warns motorists the 1968 license plate deadline is midnight February 15. Plates must be mounted or face arrest and fines up to 100 dollars. Mail deliveries may be delayed by third class mail. over the counter services exist in Springfield Chicago and 69 banks statewide with hours 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
