Eugene Gallagher West section park district foreman releases figures on elm blight toll. West-Northwest Parks lost 340 trees last year but 564 were planted mostly non elm varieties like honey locust and sugar maple along with 351 shrubs. He warns elm blight worsens annually and predicts replacing all elms in 10 years if no cure.
Mayor Daley announced Metropolitan Life Insurance Co has made five million dollars available to finance housing in East and West Garfield Park Humboldt Park and Austin through Great Lakes Mortgage Corp. Funds support FHA loans for purchase refinance construction or rehabilitation. Great Lakes will coordinate with service centers at 9 N Cicero 3014 W Madison and 1 N Pulaski to assist owners and stabilize values.
