A Kostner firm faces pollution complaints and a ten day deadline for cleanup. A scam letter offers a bogus gift. warn others and contact the Better Business Bureau.
A Northwest Side youth has been chosen as a member of the service corps for the national Boy Scout conference at Colorado State University Fort Collins. Rodger F. Accardi 3555 Hirsch a Chicago Explorer Scout is among 40 Explorers from across the nation serving as aides at the National Executive Training conference which runs from Sunday through Friday. He earlier aided at the National Explorer Delegates conference. Accardi president of post 990 the Chicago Area council sponsored special posts. The 16 year old also worked on the camp staff at the Owassa Scout Reservation this summer. About 4 000 professional Scout leaders from all regions attend the 13th national executive conference to launch a Scout program for 1969 through 1976.
Humboldt marks Labor Day on Sept. 2 with the closing of the Junior Rainbow Fleet at Humboldt Park. Young sailors host a Venetian Day Water carnival with races jousting a water rescue team and a pirates attack on a life boat. The events begin at 1 pm at the boat house with free admission.
A bicycle left in the areaway beside Mrs. Ruth Metter’s home at 2328 North Springfield was found about three weeks ago. Metter has sought the owner by inquiring locally and offers to return the vehicle upon proper description. Contact SP 25444.
The Animal Welfare League urges vacationers not to abandon dogs and cats at summer homes or resorts. Abandonment can lead to starvation and is punishable by a fine up to 200 dollars. Unwanted pets can be dropped at 6224 S Wabash or picked up by league ambulances in Chicago and nearby areas. Call 667 0088 for itinerary. Mothers are warned not to let family dogs follow children to school due to risks and local ordinances.
Dr. Ann Lally, superintendent, says enrollment likely remains constant as the 1968-69 term opens September 4. Final board approval on mobile units at Prosser High school and other uncertainties cloud projections. Articulation days seek to enroll 9th graders and guide transfers across Fortman Kelvyn Park Schurz and Prosser facilities.
During a 10 minute contest, children used only their bare hands to catch as many of 150 goldfish as possible. Each fish caught went into a bowl and became a prize after the time elapsed. The event aimed to raise funds for an indoor YMCA pool.
The first annual AAU physical fitness pentathlon for youths ages 6 to 18 will be held at Hanson Park stadium in Chicago tomorrow. Registration opens at 12 noon with competition starting at 1 pm. The event is backed by boards of education parks, YMCA, and boys clubs with support from Chicago police and youth welfare officials. Quaker Oats is the national sponsor and four Jewel stores supply refreshments and prizes. About 1000 youngsters from 100 local groups are expected to participate with certificates and eight prizes in a drawing. Free bus transportation is provided from Jewel stores and several summer activity sites.
Advertising and news deadlines change because of the Labor Day holiday. Community Publications newspapers distribute as usual on Wednesday. Classified ads accept new copy by 3 p.m. Tuesday with a noon Tuesday cancellation. Display ads due by 3:30 p.m. Friday. News deadline moves to noon Friday.
District 4 and 8 superintendents project an overall enrollment increase for the new term starting Sept. 4. Marshall High would reach 5,990 students, Austin 3,200, Steinmetz about 2,600, with Emmet and May elementarys up notably and Sumner Elementary near 2,373.
The Leukemia Society America Chicago chapter seeks about 10,000 volunteers for its annual fund raising march to support patient aid research and education with a $250,000 goal. Robert Wirth, chapter president, notes past drives drew 6,500 participants and urges door to door campaigns statewide.
MM2 Lee W. Kivi serves aboard the US Coast Guard Cutter Owasco patrolling Viet Nam waters. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Eric Kivi, he is a 1964 Foreman High School graduate. The ship previously patrolled the North Atlantic and visited Cuba Panama Canal Zone Hawaii and the Philippines before deploying to Viet Nam. He has pursued forestry and conservation courses through the University of Minnesota and North American School of Conservation.
Dr. Ann M. Lally announces seven large elementary schools in district five will open today for counseling and placement of new pupils. Principals assistants and clerks will help at Avondale Brentano Darwin Funston Linne Nixon Stowe from 9 to 3 to enroll children new to the districts for proper programming at the start of the school year.
