AAA cautions motorists about vapor lock and overheated engines causing stalling in stop and start traffic. A dirty fuel pump, clogged cooling system, or low radiator water increases risk. When stopped, shift to neutral and run the engine at fast idle to aid radiator cooling.
If the engine overheats and you cannot pull off the road turn on the heater and fan to improve circulation. If vapor lock stalls the engine pull off the road open the hood and allow cooling for up to 30 minutes. Depressing the carburetor butterfly valve and pressing the gas sometimes breaks the vapor lock.
