British Scouts Visit U S Jamboree Guests

Eight West-Northwest Side Boy Scouts returned from the 12th World Jamboree with souvenirs from over 100 countries. English guests of Eagle Scout Paul Caponera toured Spokane and Farragut State Park, sharing experiences and noting differences in camping and park crowds.

West-Northwest Side Catholic schools to enroll 17000 students

Archdiocesan schools on the West-Northwest Side project more than 17000 pupils this fall, with 12800 in 14 grade schools and about 4200 in five high schools. St. Mel is the only high school expecting lower attendance. St. Philip High anticipates a large freshman class and expansion plans. Remodeling and additions are planned across multiple elementary and high schools.

Philomena Plans New Center at St. Philomena Church

The Rev Harold H Sieger announced a Sunday ground breaking at 1 p m for a new parish center addition to St Philomena Church at 1921 Kedvale. The bi level building will sit at Cortland and Karlow with gym on two floors and locker showers and coaches offices. A closed circuit television room will connect to the old school.

Figures Show TB Is Stubborn Foe

John E. Egdorf of the Tuberculosis Institute of Chicago and Cook County reports 1,317 people with active TB in eight Chicago area hospitals as of Aug 1. The breakdown lists 789 at Chicago Municipal Tuberculosis Sanitarium, 225 at Chicago State Tuberculosis Hospital, and 148 at Hines Veterans Administration Hospital.

TB Awareness Drive Offers Free Chest X Rays In City

Suburban Cook County Tuberculosis Sanitarium district and Michael Reese and Wesley Memorial hospitals report hundreds diagnosed with TB annually. An intensive Chicago summer survey uses mobile Tuberculosis Institute units to provide free chest x rays at East Garfield Park on Aug 25 and Humboldt Park on Aug 28 with hours from morning to late afternoon.

Logan Library Hosts Exhibit by Area Artist Milo Olsen

The Logan Square Branch at 3255 Altgeld presents Milo Olsen’s oil and watercolor paintings. Olsen is a local artist who began painting recently and has created many colorful works. The library recommends beginner titles from its collection and notes hours 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily and 9 a.m. to 5 30 p.m. Saturday.

The annual Have A Heart tag day in Chicago and area, one of five city approved tag days, will occur September 8 with 50 charitable agencies taking part in the collections. More than 10,000 women are expected to volunteer as taggers.

Logan Square Neighborhood association outlines plans for its 5th annual drive starting Aug 21 to raise 45000 for programs and staff. More than 25 volunteers will visit local industrial and business concerns for contributions. Plans include support for the Logan Square subway extension and a long range plan with a professional urban planner if funds are raised.
