Catastrophic Freight Crash Leaves Several Dead and Wrecks Track

A Friday morning Union Pacific freight collision near North Platte wrecked thirteen cars and destroyed rolling stock and perishable cargo. Engineer Kelly, fireman and brakeman died or were badly injured as the boiler and locomotive projected across tracks. The unknown man found amid wreckage was later identified as a Boise City chauffeur, with his mother in New York learning of the tragedy.

The May report shows incoming mail 112 257 pieces outgoing mail 93 207 total 206 464. Carrier activity lists 6 284 collected 87 644 derived total 93 923. Office business registers 1 200 money orders 1 100 total value 1 160 387 dollars special delivery 6 40. KRFD carrier handled 5 506. Mail is handled five to eleven times before reaching patrons, about 1 600 000 total touches for a town of 6 000.

Acts of Kindness by a Railroad Foreman

Switch Foreman Harry Johnson found a sick penniless veteran, seventy eight, in the railroad yards and took him home. G A R members helped with transport to Sidney and traced the old soldier once living in Ogden who had gone to Missouri to find a brother. He ran out of money and became ill during the return journey.

Railroad grading for Bridgeport to Kearney line

The News-Blade reports that grading started last week to prepare a line from Bridgeport to Kearney as part of a new trackage approved with $60,000,000 Hill bonds. No contracts let yet and a re-survey is needed, but the line is expected to be built and in operation within three years.

District No. 127 invites sealed bids for two new school houses near the Catholic pecereny and Bratt School House area. Contractors may bid hollow tile stucco cement block or frame on both foundation and above.
