The Republican Convention nominated a grand ticket naming candidates for key party posts. Delegates chose a slate focused on unity and leadership, signaling campaign strategy ahead of the upcoming elections.
The Republican convention heard endorsements for Tripp, Wells, and Meredith, with Wells securing the nomination for representative after a two ballot scramble. Howard won the treasurer race, Tripp captured sheriff, and Minnie Walsh was acclaimed for county superintendent amid celebration. No doubt the event reflected strong party unity and optimism.
Last Saturday morning Newton citizens gathered near Wagley’s drug store to discuss the Republican convention. Ed Cook of the meat market grew heated when a 9 or 10 year old boy asked when to bring those cats, prompting a silent eruption and rumors of a joke about buying a fat cat with no money. The boy’s joke led to claims that dogs and cats were turned into bologna, though Cook explained the misunderstanding.
