The Postoffice Department orders free mail delivery in Newton starting March 1 with three carriers and three districts. Thirty-five street boxes will be installed. A clerk and carrier examination will occur in Newton on January 6, 1900, at 9 a.m. Applications must be filed by December 30, 1899, complete and weight/height requirements apply. The Knights of Pythias of Prairie City hosted a Tuesday evening reception for A Caldwell recently returned from the Philippines with the Fifty-First Iowa. Geo Hall was guest of honor. Ladies opened the event at Mrs. Marshall Feathers home, then entered the K P Hall for an elegant supper and a varied after supper program featuring soldier recitals.

Death of Will T. Conner in Central City
Word reached here of the death of W. T. Conner at his Central City Nebraska home on the 11th inst. A long time resident and former proprietor of the Star Hotel Lambert House he served in the Civil War with the Thirty-Eighth Iowa. He was 63, leaving a widow and two sons. His recent visit here showed him in good health and spirits. News of his death shocked many friends in this city and county.

Miss Noomi Garton Delivers Burmah Sermon in Des Moines Church
Miss Noomi Garton of Des Moines occupied the pulpit at the Baptist church last Saturday night and spoke at Sunday services. Former Burmah missionary, she described the people and wore garbs of Burmah classes. She is described as beautiful, educated, and fluent, winning listeners with earnest Christian zeal. In Newton she stayed with her nephew Ernest Tilley and wife.

Des Moines township’s oldest residents celebrate golden anniversary
Stephen Rifle and his German wife, long established near Prairie City, emigrated from Baden in 1846 and settled on government land south of Prairie City. They moved into town in 1881 and have since lived through decades of hard toil. Mr Biffle is eighty and his wife seventy-five, childless but have two adopted sons. They marked their golden anniversary in 1895 and show prospects of long lives ahead.

Funeral of John C. Waring Near Reasnor
The funeral for John C. Waring, who died at his home near Reasnor, was held Thursday afternoon with a large crowd attending. Born in New York in 1846, he moved west to Jasper County, Iowa in 1865, married Mattie Crea in 1866, and lived in Jasper County since 1872. Survived by seven children, he spent over ten years in the lumber and grain business in Reasnor and was held in high esteem by neighbors.
