The petition filed in Jasper County District Court alleges defamation by the State Democrat owner Robert Kepton and editor Rogern Kennington. Damages of 5000 dollars are sought plus costs for alleged false sensational reporting harming reputation and business.
At the residence of Mr. Jay Clark this evening the ladies of the P. E. O. society will tender a reception to their state grand president Mrs. Lulu A. McHenry. The C. L. S. C. and other literary societies of the city and their friends are invited to attend.
The Union Thanksgiving service was set for Thursday November 28 at 10 30 a m at the M E church with Rev J S Nasmith of the Baptist church to preach but illness moves the sermon to Rev C V Cowan at the Disciple church at the same time and place Merchants are urged by the Ministers Association to close shops and attend The union prayer meeting will be at the Lutheran church Thursday evening.
Miss Belle Lambert assisted in an elocutionary entertainment at the Drake University chapel in Des Moines on Tuesday evening. The Megister of the city notes her success with a hearty encore and a humorous impersonation. Her talent is described as high order and her friends numerous and proud.

Miss Sadie Jontz visited friends in Valeria last Saturday. Mrs. O. M. True left for a few weeks with friends at Jonesville Iowa. G. M. Webb made a business trip to Marshalltown. William Thompson of Marshalltown is handling business in Baxter this week. Henry Silwold visited Newton on business Tuesday. H. Downs of Collins visited with his son H. 5 last Sunday. Charles Cool and wife visited friends in Melbourne last Sunday. Curtis Cool and wife from Clyde visited Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Davis last Sunday. Mrs. R. E. Fair, with her parents, returned to Rockville Nebraska last Monday. Mrs. Austin Emmert of Melbourne visited W. H. Emmert and family last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. I. B. Brower from Ira visited the editor of the New Era and his sister last Sunday. There will be Union Thanksgiving services at the Congregational church Thursday November 28. Rev. W. Lawrence of Des Moines will deliver the sermon. The Ladies Aid society of the Congregational church will give a musical at the Congregational.
