After debate over a tax levy for a poor house, the Attorney General confirmed the Supervisors could add the levy to the 1505 tax at the September meeting. The ruling backs an earlier attorney’s opinion, affirming legality and easing concern over delaying the project for the indigent.
A respected citizen and Union Army veteran Mr. Laughlin of four miles south of Prairie City died Monday shortly after feeling ill while unloading a potato load. He was taken to Charles Bryan's home where he died within moments. Affected by heart failure, medical aid arrived too late. He was an active Christian Church member.
A Newton-area religious meeting series is announced with weekly sessions led by a noted orator. Mrs. Belle Rodgers will sing nightly as part of the program to benefit the community, inviting residents to attend the first sermon.
A Jackson telegram reports Chester Rowe, brother of the accused, fled with funds from the sister county. Chester, now naturalized as a Mexican citizen, cannot be extradited, but faces charges in Mexico for bringing stolen property. Detectives, likely From See of Pinkerton, plan to return him to Poweshiek for complicity in the crime.
