Easter plans fill city churches with special services and music. Lutheran, Presbyterian, M E, United Presbyterian and Catholic congregations schedule morning sermons, cantatas, and choir numbers, with evening programs and confessions noted. A quiet wedding for Ada Guthrie and Arge Vieth concludes the piece, detailing a Mariposa township ceremony and future farm home.
Last week to pay taxes without penalty. Next Monday is the final grace day. If county taxes remain unpaid, a two percent addition will be charged. Aged about seventy, he recalls earlier service as Jasper county clerk in the sixties, walks on crutches, and shows unwavering party zeal while remaining a familiar figure to local supporters near Chattanooga.
The N N C Penmanship Contest for winter term improvement concluded with a lively competition. Judges awarded a gold medal to William Brown of Newton and a silver medal to Clarence W Robb of Buena Vista township. Warren Leatherby narrowly missed the second prize for his fine work.
Mrs. Charlie Drew found a needle embedded in her year old daughter's hip on Tuesday morning while dressing her. The head of the needle was visible, and a physician removed it. the wound appeared discolored, suggesting it had been there for hours.
Long list of Newton area notices including parish house remodeling plans with a new porch and kitchen upgrades, Roy B. Fisk hired as Des Moines College coach and trainer, multiple local family visits and illnesses, deaths of elderly residents, real estate moves, and community events. The First M. E. church overflowed for the Iowa Wesleyan University Glee and Mandolin Clubs from Mt Pleasant. About twenty five students performed to enthusiastic acclaim with solos by Frances Arnold and a notable oration by Glenn A. Mitchell. Local students Bert Mershon and Bert Loveall joined in the celebration as townsfolk welcomed the visiting group with praise and memories of a fine program.
Mr Rankin scheduled a 3 pm temperance lecture for women at M E church. He failed to appear, nap and answer letters, then rushed to address a large audience around 4 pm, delivering a spirited talk, leaving the women amused by the misadventure.
George J. Pomeroy of the Chicago Cedar Rapids and Council Bluffs line achieved a 99.85 percent score in the Illinois railway postal exam scheme. From 1356 cards, only two were mis directed, illustrating exceptional clerical skill among Iowa clerks examined by Chief Clerk Wilson’s office.
The Crawford family bade Newton friends goodbye last Friday before moving to Ft. Morgan Colorado. Mr. J R Crawford misplaced travel coupons after arriving to depart on the morning train, delaying his departure a day. The incident, though taxing, amused friends and reflected his nervousness leaving the old home and long-time associations.

Alonzo Thomas a Civil War veteran died at his West Newton home last Friday morning at about fifty eight. He leaves a wife and six children and suffered from consumption for many years. Though long in pain he remained cheerful and hopeful of recovery. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the home conducted by Rev. Lusk of the Baptist church. His comrades from the G. A. R. laid him to rest in the soldiers lot at the local cemetery.
Jasper County District Court has drawn a list of petit jurors for the upcoming term to be held at the New ton court house starting April 5. A. C. Rankin leads gospel temperance meetings at the M E Church attracting large congregations each night. Nearly six hundred have signed the pledge. A women's meeting was held Monday afternoon. Framing for Friday evening’s gathering continues as Rankin earns best wishes from many friends for continued success.
