Newton Lodge No. OW A. F. and AM celebrated its forty seventh anniversary in a large banquet attended by about 450. J. T. Pound led the program with remarks and gifts to Caleb Lamb’s framed portrait. Hon. Lafe Young delivered the main address praising Masonry. The Masons bought the main hall and Mann building, plan a three story addition, and upgrade the block with steam heat and sewerage. Jasper County backs Judge Clem ents for a second term, viewing him as a fine presiding officer.

Clements Seeks Second Term At Grinnell Convention
Judge W G Clements of this city will seek nomination for a second term at the district judicial convention in Grinnell on June 4. His past three years have earned high commendation for his able and impartial conduct of duties. He first held court in Sigourney in March 1899, when the Sigourney News predicted a four week term would adjourn with a docket almost cleared and Clements earning broad esteem.

Elocutionary Entertainment at Christian Church
Rev Leake of the Christian church will present an elocutionary program for the Endeavor Society next Wednesday evening April 9 at 8 o clock. Last Sunday afternoon the Oriental commandery No 22 K T held services in the First M E church with a full house. The commandery members in full uniform led by the K T Band marched from the asylum to the church and occupied the center tier. Rev J C Willits delivered a sermon regarded as among the best in the city on such occasions. The M E choir and band provided excellent singing and music.

A J White of Lynnville Dies After Illness
A J White, a well known citizen of Lynnville, died at his home last Friday morning after a brief illness. He had reportedly drunk heavily for a month or more. His wife found him unresponsive after Thursday afternoon rest and he died the next morning after hours of unconsciousness. The posting suggests his death was a sacrifice to strong drink.

Fire Threat Near Miss At Coutts Printing Office
Early Friday morning a fire at W. P. Coutts Enterprise printing office damaged the building and a large stock of groceries notions and wallpaper. The loss to the structure runs around 450 dollars covered by insurance while goods suffered 1200 to 1300 dollars in damage with about a third covered by insurance. The printing machinery endured only water and smoke impact and Coutts plans rapid repairs to resume operations at the same site.
