Death of J O Chapman One of Jasper county landmarks dies
John Ogden Chapman aged eighty five died Tuesday night January 7 at his son Georges home near Metz after years on the Md Prairie farm. He was born November 14 1816 in Franklin Co Ohio and moved to Iowa in 1865. Survived by six children Fannie Hafferty Denver Eilen Hurd Kenton Hattie Greenlief Newton George Chapman Metz Charles Chapman Pendleton and Mary Galusha Newton. Funeral Thursday Jan 9 at Md Prairie residence conducted by Rev Dowd Free Methodist. Interment Metz cemetery.

Narrow escape as fire damages Vaughn home drapery
A match lit by Florence ignited chenille drapery in an archway at J. J. Vaughan’s home last week. The blaze spread to wallpaper and woodwork before neighbors or occupants could extinguish it, ruining the expensive draperies and risking serious consequences.

Mrs Margaret Burnett wife of Charles E Bennett died Friday night January 13 in Rock Island after a prolonged illness from typhoid fever followed by peritonitis He was about 34 and leaves three sisters and one brother The funeral was arranged with the body brought to Newton on a special river car with about fifty relatives and friends present including Locomotive Auxiliary members

Newton County official paper selection sparks contest
The Board of Supervisors waded through proposals from The Record Journal and The Courier of Newton and The Colfax Clipper to be the county papers. The Clipper won outside the county seat while Newton’s papers clashed over lists and a hearing set for February 26. Supervisors also cut the paper rate by 25 percent from 34 to 25 cents per inch.
