Gospel Meetings Begin At Local Church In Large Opening

Installation Of Garrett Post And WRC Officers Shine
Last Friday evening the Garrett Post and Woman's Relief Corps held joint officer installations at G A R Hall. Post officers include Commander Gov. W. Hickman Jr and Sgt Major F R Witmer with several others. The Relief Corps installed officers led by President Mary El Battles and included Susie Clark and Lucy Fatlor among a large slate. The group later marched to the Baptist church for a banquet served by church ladies, praised for its abundance and grace.

Peter Y Lant a well known citizen of the city died at his West Marion Street home on Tuesday morning January 7 at about 3 o clock aged about sixty seven years He suffered from bronchial trouble and heart disease He was native of New York born 1835 lived much of life in Illinois Civil War veteran Company F Third Illinois Infantry He moved to Iowa after the war and resided on a farm east of Newton before moving to town He leaves a wife and one son Fred W Lant Funeral today at 2 from his residence with Rev R F Chambers presiding

Miss Jane Johnston Dies After Long Family Life
Miss Jane Johnston, longtime Newton resident and former county teacher, died Saturday afternoon at age 63. Born January 1838 in Poughkeepsie, she cared for her siblings after her mother’s death, led a devout Episcopal life, and remained close to family in her later years. Her funeral was held Monday at the Brunner residence with Rector J Evans Ryan officiating and solo by Lettie Earley.

Nellie Colyar Dies After Long Illness At Baxter
The daughter of Frank Colyar of near Daxter, Nellie Colyar, nineteen, died Sunday evening after a lingering illness with consumption. Her mother and eldest sister had died in the prior three years from the same disease. She leaves her father, three sisters Florence Fish Maude Minnie and a brother Edward. She graduated from Newton Normal College with the class of 1900 and was highly esteemed. The funeral was held Tuesday at 10 in the Christian church of Baxter.
