Funeral of Grandma Livings Marked by Faithful Life
The funeral for Susan C. Waller Livings, died at her daughter Mrs. L. O. Rogers home, was held Friday at 2 oclock at the Baptist church. Conducted by Rev. Smith, the service honored her long life of Christian works and gentle influence in Ford County. Born Susan C. Waller, she married Albert G. Livings on May 25, 1851, and was mother to four, cared for sixteen years by Mrs. Rogers.

A Painful Accident Near Town

Fire destroys two story Hume farm house near Mitchellville
Ora Conard and family lost their home on the Hume farm three miles south of Mitchellville when a fire between one and two o'clock Sunday morning burned the two story house and most contents. The building carried $1,000 insurance but the contents were not insured, placing a heavy burden on the poor farmer.

All Down but One Houghton Family Stricken by Illness
The Houghton family living 14 miles east of town suffered a week of illness with vomiting and stomach pains. On Tuesday Mrs John Houghton and Albert Hotchikiss were affected, followed by Stella Houghton Charlie Houghton and John's young son on Wednesday. John remained well enough to care for others. Dr Hammer suspects poisoning from a baking powder brand, and all are improving.

Hog Case Trials Progress in Burton and Clark Gangs
The Second Burton is found guilty while the Third Burton and Clark face trials in Jasper County. Mint Burton pleads guilty to hog stealing. Ed Burton was convicted last week. Howard Burton stands trial in district court for taking a hog with felonious intent. Clark serves a sentence at Ft Madison for the offense while awaiting proceedings in Newton. The trial record notes a large gang of hog thieves infesting the southeast. Jurors convicted Mint and Ea Barton after a short deliberation. sentence not yet pronounced. Death of D Y Cross a Jasper county soldier dies at Colfax home
D Y Cross an old Jasper county resident since the 1850s died last Wednesday morning at his Colfax area home three miles north of Colfax. He was about 54, served in the 9th Iowa Cavalry, and left a wife and six children. The funeral was held at 2 pm yesterday at his home with Henry Houck and Zora Shipley in attendance.
