A large number of guests attended the reception given in honor of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Lyday at the home of Mrs. Mary Lyday last Friday evening. Prisoner Sentenced to Three-and-a-Half Years at Fort Madison

M. R Burton was sentenced to two and one half years at hard labor in Ft. Madison penitentiary this morning. He stated he was coaxed into the crime by Darius Clark as he spoke he broke down crying. Judge Ryan called the first meeting during Christmas festivities and warned the prisoner of a lasting blight. The judge advised future conduct and noted the need for justice. A new trial motion was filed by Ed Burton’s attorney.

Death of Mrs. Hill Near Newton Ends Short Illness

Mrs. Eliza Hill also known as Eliza Scott died at her family home six miles north of town after a brief illness of bowels and stomach. Daughter of Charles Scott of southeast Newton, she leaves a husband Charles Hill and a young child.
