Miss Lolo Shaw and Geo Orcutt wed in Monroe Iowa with Rev R W Smith officiating as guests from Des Moines and Drakeville attended. Emma Sipe and Ervie joined in Reasnor and Lizzie De Bruyn and Ira De Bruyn wed at J C Dunmire home near Newton. The Shriners visit Davenport and a Mystic Shrine banquet followed with 115 seated guests. Community gatherings included charity booths at the Armory and a holiday trade opening in Newton.
Nellie M. Spears, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Spears, wed Capt. Mart Riggy of Des Moines West Side Fire Department at 11 am in Monroe. Rev. Wilson Mills presided. ceremony followed by a wedding feast before the couple departed for Des Moines to begin married life. Attendees included Mrs. A. C. Gates and son from Newton, W. A. Spears of Ottumwa, Miss May Myers of Knoxville, Miss Nellie Riggs and niece, and D. D. Harger and wife from Des Moines.
The district court session closed with no prosecution in the Keaton versus Iowa State Democrat libel suit, the hog theft cases dominating the docket. Ed Burton faces penalty after a guilty plea, while witnesses and local figures like W.G. Clements and Judge Lewis appear in defense. Hog cholera devastates Jasper County farms, with numerous losses reported in Lynn Grove and southern townships. Notable victims include J. Conover, G. Vanderpol, P. Gerritt Smith, and many others.
A Newton area tale recalls a seasoned lawyer who upon hearing a client’s case declares he cannot serve because he already represents the opposing side. The client, Patrick Moran, later meets the lawyer who demands two dollars for the prior advisory remark, Moran paying the fee despite the stunt.
The Lynnville Herald and the post office relocate to a two story building just north of the current office. The post office takes the front ground floor, while the Herald occupies the rear rooms and second story. Recon congratulates Miss Mathews and Mr. Meredith on their new quarters.
William Greenleaf died December 6 in Mound Prairie township at his son L A Greenleaf's home. Born February 13 1407 in Stanstead County Canada he lived 4 years 9 months 23 days. He moved from Canada to Illinois then Davenport and Jasper County settling on the family farm. He married Mary Whitcomb in 1832, later Eunice Brown and a third wife. Of eleven children seven survive. He joined Newton Congregational Church and died with Christian faith. funeral at Bear Grove schoolhouse with Rev C C Harrah. buried Greenleaf cemetery at the old home farm. He was a steady citizen, well regarded by Jasper County residents.
A letter reports the death of Miss Anna Loomis at her Ashland Oregon home on November 2. Born near the city in September 1872, she was about 23 years old. The illness was typhoid fever. Her passing brings sorrow to her friends and former community, with sympathies offered from old neighbors and kin shaded by the Thanksgiving period.
Rev Shea recalls a Des Moines mother’s death leaving six children. Three found homes, three put in Christian Home. The eldest child died before Thanksgiving. at the funeral the father rejoined mourners, embraced his daughter by the white casket, and the room filled with tears. Her hopeful longing for parental love moved all present.
