Supply of Camphor in Japan and Forest Renewal

Japan now dominates camphor supply with annual export around five million pounds, a quarter to the United States and the rest to Europe. Crude camphor is refined abroad though Japan has begun refining domestically. The process uses chipped wood boiled to vapor, crystallizes on bamboo screens, and collected as crude camphor. Forests are being renewed as old trees decline, with government planting and care to restore supply within 25 to 30 years. A district in Tosa holds thirteen trees about a century old capable of 40,000 pounds of crude camphor worth about 4,000 dollars.
