General Headquarters at the Court House and the Committee on Entertainment meet in the old post office room on the west side of the square to organize activities and entertainments for the town.
Vibrant Newton hosts Hornets Nest Brigade and Grand Army veterans with a marching parade from the northeast square to the school, opera house events, and a camp fire. Notables include Gen. Francis Drake and Gen. Prentiss, with reception committees, music, and a roster of attendees from many towns and states.
A Civil War summary recounts the April 6 7 Shiloh battle under Generals Grant and Johnson. It notes Union losses of 13047 and Confederate losses of 10699 with heavy Hornets Nest fighting by Tuttle’s brigade and Wallace division. It highlights key regiments from Jasper and Iowa, nurse Mrs Kingdom, and a veteran reunion near Newton.
After a blaze at a local canning factory, salvage efforts yielded nearly a thousand cases of corn saved from the smoking ruins. The cans were blackened but the corn remained in good condition, though valued at little. J. W. McLaughlin traveled to Des Moines on Tuesday to dispose of the stock.
At a Newton conference with religious denominations it was decided to unite to save souls. Major Whittle of Chicago may visit in October to hold meetings in a large tent. The effort aims to be beneficial, and Whittle is noted as a national figure. The piece warns against trusting “agents for this and that” who sell religious wares at inflated prices.
The Iowa Shiloh battlefield commission met at the Porters of the Churchill House and fixed November as the visiting date for Shiloh battlefield. Maj Reed urged timely action to establish positions held by Iowa regiments at Shiloh. Attendees included Col. W. T. Shaw Col. G. L. Godfrey Col. J. B. Morrison Maj. G. W. Crosby Capt. E. B. Soper Maj. C. W. Kepler Capt. J.P. Munroe L. Kinkade and C. A. Huston.
The paper corrects a previous misquote involving J B VanCourt and Bible wording. The officers note the heard phrase was "The love of money is the root of all evil," not "money is the root of all evil." They acknowledge possible changes since the Marshall town convention and pledge accuracy going forward.

A worker was exposed to a pile of shavings in Shaw's foundry on Wednesday afternoon around 4:15. The engine room caught fire moments later, but the tire department arrived promptly and extinguished the blaze with little damage. A crowd gathered as the scene cooled.
