City Council Reappoints Officials and Forms Committees
Monday night the city council met with all members present and Mayor Long presiding. Reports from Ways and Means and officers were filed, and committees for the year were announced. A. C. Gates and Tom Smith were unanimously re elected as City Clerk and street commissioner. After supper, a rock er was presented to the host, and a lighthearted gathering followed at Al’s smoking den. About 25 members of the Bible Union and friends gathered with Mrs. R. H. Errett last Thursday for a social hour. Helpers Mrs. F. L. Funeral of Levi H Cope Held in Newton with Masonic Honor
Levi H Cope died after a final stroke on March 12 and was laid to rest in Newton following a service at the Baptist church led by Rev C F Lusk. He left a wife six children including Maud and Elizabeth, with former home near Newton and later Centerville South Dakota. The Newton Masonic Lodge and K T Band led the funeral cortege and grave services.

Aged Saint at Rest Grandma Hamilton Dies at 81
Mary Ann Cox Hamilton aged nearly eighty two died at noon Tuesday from paralysis after visiting her grandson Dr Hollis Joy. Born October 5 1820 in Raleigh she married Prof J B Hamilton and lived in Chicago before moving to Newton. Thirteen children were born seven survive. She joined Congregational Church in Newton after Quaker upbringing and was beloved. Remains were moved to Chicago for burial at Rose Hill cemetery beside her late husband.

Mrs Sarah Ledyard died in Oska loosa on Tuesday her remains brought to Newton Wednesday morning over the Central and buried beside her husband in our cemetery. She was widow of Geo R Ledyard who served as County Authtor after the Civil War. She leaves a daughter and two sons Ella Miller Des Moines George W Ledyard Des Moines Willie Ledyard inmate of County Home. She was prominent in social circles and her last illness and death are not fully known.

Decoration Day Speaker Named by Garrett Post
Garrett Post committee secures Wm A Hunter warden of the state penitentiary at Anamosa to deliver the annual Decoration Day address. Hunter, a Jasper County soldier and Newton native, enlisted in 1861 in Company B of the Thirteenth Iowa Infantry and served nearly four years. He is expected to give a fine oration. Geo Richmond departed this week for Portland Oregon to visit a brother.

District Court Terms Open in Busy County Session
The April term of the District Court convened with Judge Dewey presiding. The grand jury began today while the petit jury is delayed until May 14. Several cases settled including Harry Galusha vs Mathilde Wendt et al and Reynolds vs James Miller. Probate reports for estates and guardianships were approved. The obituary notes the death of a Bu ena Vista County resident who moved from Germany in 1881 and was laid to rest at Mt Zion Chapel with Rev. D R Martin officiating.

Death of Ida May in Malaka Township
The home of Mr and Mrs Israel Hall in Malaka township mourns the death of their daughter Ida May aged nineteen years five months after a week long illness from pneumonia. Born November 5 1882 she prepared for teaching and would have begun school duties next Monday. She was a devoted member of Wittemberg Congregational church and her funeral Tuesday was well attended with Rev J J Mitchell of Prairie City delivering a comforting sermon.

The tenth annual Newton township Sunday School convention in this city drew a large attendance. The afternoon session at Mission Chapel featured the program with all participants present and ready to respond. Recitations by children and songs impressed attendees, aiding the success of the event. The evening session at the Baptist church was well filled with two talks on needs of the Sabbath School and how to meet them by Rev. W Leitzell and Rev. Wells.

Obituary of Hans Claussen of Iowa Pioneer Lutheran Faith
Hans Claussen born in Swab stedt Germany on March 18 1817 died at home in Buena Vista Township Jasper County Iowa on April 3 1902 aged 85 years 16 days He joined the Lutheran church at 15 and remained faithful He married Margaret Black in 1841 producing John Clauseen and Christine Reineke In 1847 he wed Mary Block producing Ada John Mackerman and two infant sons After her death he married Anna Pauls in 1861 and had seven children Adolph Henry Herman Rosa Agnes Louise with several predeceased The surviving widow Mary Pauls Claussen remains with other children and kin in memory.

The three day sale closed Thursday with Carrier & Son and Geo M Woody of Colins Iowa leading. Over 250 pure bred cattle sold, with Woody collecting $21,550 averaging over 35 dollars. The imported Lily of the Valley roan cow brought 1,750 to Shaffer and West Bros Es terville. Twenty eight head sold at 400 each, eleven heifers averaged 800, total 7,245 for forty head. Breeders outside the county expect future sales. buyers pleased.

Nine year old dies of hydrophobia after dog bite
Lucy EK Hiatt of Mitch ellville nine years old died a few days after a dog bite three weeks earlier. Initially no ill effects appeared until the illness began with aggressive snarling and barking. Doctors Hibbs and Smouse treated her but she died within hours after the Des Moines physician arrived.
