Frederick faces a dire water shortage with about 2 million gallons used daily and 1 million gallons lost to leakage each day. Reservoirs and mountain-sourced supply are filling shortages, while city authorities push conservation as a meeting of the water committee reviews options.
At the annual meeting of the Frederick County Free Library Association officers and directors were elected. New officers include Mrs. D. T. Ordeman as president and Miss Grace Neldig as secretary. The librarian reported 4908 books circulated and 1950 periodicals for the year ending August 31, with 2201 readers registered.
Frederick chamber members propose a broad program of civic and economic improvements. A digest lists 90 to 100 recommendations from a questionnaire, with action deferred until next meeting to allow broad study by members and selective adoption of key projects.
The Associated Press reports Washington cabinet decision to enforce prohibition within three miles at sea with limited exceptions for ships in contact with shore crews. Officials examined municipal law up to the three mile line and found it conflicting with international law, warning such actions could involve the government with other nations.
The Washington government voiced unequivocal approval of allied proposals to ensure freedom of the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus and to protect racial and religious minorities. Secretary Hughes stated this in reply to an inquiry, confirming continued support amid the Nest Escterm situation.
The Post Office Department orders all homes to install door slots or mail receptacles by December 31 to ensure prompt delivery. Postmaster J Alleine Williamson will mail notices to noncompliant households urging cooperation. The aim is to reduce delays from carriers delivering to unchecked doors and prevent mail theft and exposure at windowsills.
Governor Ritchie declines to return Walter B. Socolow to New York, saying such action would delay the murder case and undermine public confidence in Maryland's criminal law. He notes Socolow is on trial in Baltimore for a murder and warns that return would trigger further habeas corpus delays and possible disciplinary action if Maryland officials violated constitutional limits.
Community debate on relieving Market street congestion by widening Bentz to two lanes and relocating trolley tracks from Market from South to Fifth to Bentz. Proponents say cars would move smoothly, Market street would stay open with no streetcar traffic, and Bentz could host future development and a public park corridor.
After a brief jury deliberation William Eddie Simonson colored was found guilty of illegally disposing of intoxicating liquor in the circuit court. Judgment deferred defense was Samuel A Lewis. The trial followed a criminal appeal from Justice J. Grahame Johnson with State prompting the jury. Arthur Weedon colored was also found guilty of second degree murder and testified regarding liquor sources at the pool room on July 15 the day of the Jenkins murder. Witnesses placed Weedon and Diggs at the scene but claimed no liquor sales from Simonson were observed.
Walker Socolow, removed from habeas corpus proceedings in New York, is tried in criminal court for the Norris murder and payroll theft. Co-defendants James Hart, John L. Smith, and Charles P. Carey plead not guilty. venue change for Socolow under consideration as jury selection begins.
Frederick is touting a new hotel funded by a 6230000 fund, with a 900000 project underway and Winchester seeking 200000 by selling 7 percent preferred stock. Niagara Falls foresees a new million dollar hotel financed with E J Hackenbury System. funds expected by December.
A thousand Turkish cavalry crossed the neutral zone from Bigha toward Erenkeul, in a move believed coordinated before the Allied note. General Harington, the British commander, was said to be seeking a pacific withdrawal of both forces at Meanee.
United States Senator Thomas E Watson of Georgia died suddenly at his Washington home after an acute asthma attack. He suffered recurrent episodes for years and was stricken after dinner last night. Watson planned to return to Georgia for Congressional vacation. He is survived by his widow and two grandchildren. His fiery opposition to certain legislation had brought him national prominence.
The Mayor and Board of Aldermen may issue and sell bonds up to $60,000 to build a storage reservoir on Tuscarora or Fishing Creek to improve Frederick’s water supply. The 1912 Assembly act authorizes this, with land acquisition through purchase or condemnation. City attorney Edward J. Smith notes engineers urged a reservoir, but prior improvements eased the need. An insurgent Republican candidate, Mrs. Mabel McKinley Baer, is active in Westchester County New York.
