Demolition Begins at Spandau Prison in Berlin
Wrecking crews start tearing down Spandau Prison as souvenir hunters pay up to 55 dollars per brick. Rudolf Hess, 93, was the sole inmate for 21 years and hanged himself in the yard. The site will become a shopping center for British troops in West Berlin. The 19th century building sits in the British sector. Allies decided its demolition to avoid a Nazi shrine.
