Chief Justice Lore tells Newcastle county grand jury that lynching is a crime against God and man and that every participant is a murderer. He urges punishment and warns that mob violence destabilizes government, endangers life and property, and invites anarchy. No indictments yet returned.
Reports from Sofia and Monastir describe Turkish forces surrounded at Perin near Melnik and facing insurgent bands led by Steinoff Servingraff Yankoff and Zontcheff. Insurgents claim 1900 Turkish deaths including two colonels, with many villages in flames and fear-driven population moves.
Washington dispatch reports informal AFL executive council discussion over the reinstatement of Assistant Foreman W A Miller by order of President Roosevelt after dismissal tied to his expulsion from the local Bookbinders Union. President Whitmore of the Stereotypers Union petitions in support, calling the Roosevelts petition to remove Miller a blunder.
Rear Admiral Evans criticizes the court that tried Assistant Paymaster Richworth Nicholson on the Asiatic station. He says the sentence of five reduction in grade was wholly inadequate and should have been dismissal. Four commissioned officers approved the verdict, Evans says, degrading naval discipline. Nicholson, a California native, faced an onshore intoxication incident in Chefoo, China.
New York Sept 22 directors of the Consolidated Lake Superior Company after a two hour meeting gave up plans to save the properties held as collateral for a loan of 5 050 009 by Sperer Co. They said stockholders are at the mercy of the banking house which can sell stock and bonds anytime. The Philadelphia contingent attended as plans to stabilize the firm were blocked by great financial interests behind rival interests. The meeting included Shields and E H Sanborn among others while other items note the naval home inspection in Philadelphia and political notes from Wilkesbarre Can ada trip and death of Frederick S Gibbs in Asbury Park.
Braver Pennsylvania September 22. The slander suit against John Wanamaker by former State Printer Robinson for 25000 damages ended in a verdict for the defendant. An 11 man jury delivered the verdict after a sick juror reduced to eleven. the judge corrected wording to read jurors finds for the defendant. Ex-State Printer Robinson will appeal. one lawyer said a motion for a new trial would be made.
The Court of Errors and Appeals in Trenton rules the McKinney general school law unconstitutional calling it a mixed classed statute. It voids the revision plan and requires reliance on preexisting laws while a new framework may be sought. No opinion was filed and none anticipated for several days.
In Seretion Pa on Sept 22 John O Hara of North Stranton attacked his wife and 18 year old son after learning the son lost his job. A revolver misfired at the father, who then shot his wife and son as they fled. The wife was critically wounded. the son suffered arm and leg injuries. O Hara was arrested and muttered he was sorry he had not killed both. Mr Hanna will not resign.
The Sovereign Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows opened in Baltimore with delegates from across the country. Grand Master Edward Rossman welcomed by Governor Smith and Mayor Wise. John B. Goodwin of Georgia spoke as Grand Sire. Reports show 1,069,906 subordinate lodge members and substantial funds allocated to relief and invested assets. About 40,000 visiting Odd Fellows in the city. streets and shops illuminated in their honor.
