Orlinsky to Enter Guilty Plea and Step Down

City Council President Walter Orlinsky told the council he will plead guilty to extorting funds from firms seeking sludge hauling contracts with Baltimore. He asked to remain president until sentencing, and faces a 12 count indictment filed in April.

Woman gets life sentence in gas station slaying

ANNAPOLIS AP An Eastern Shore woman Crystal Wessell of Grasonville was sentenced to life plus five years for the December 21 1981 execution style slaying of a U S Army Sergeant moonlighting at a Gambrills gas station. She was convicted of first degree murder and two handgun violations. Co defendant Earl Edward Burke 25 also of Grasonville faces trial in Chestertown on another case arising from a December incident at an Anne Arundel County service station.

Lewis seeks legislation to end rail strike

Transportation Secretary Drew Lewis urged Congress to swiftly approve a bill ending the freight rail strike. House hearings featured Lewis and other witnesses while Senate leaders planned a separate session to consider the president’s request. The proposed measure would impose a commission’s recommendations on the railroads and striking engineers after a 60 day cooling off period that ended Sunday.

Freedom from Smoking clinic planned by Lung Association

The American Lung Association of Mid Maryland announces a seven session Freedom from Smoking Clinic starting in October and ending in November. In cooperation with Frederick Memorial Hospital, the program aims to help smokers quit through small group work, individual action plans, relaxation techniques, and a supporting cassette. Sessions run Tuesday evenings with one Thursday session, all at Frederick Memorial Hospital old cafeteria, fee for the full course.

Psychiatric Unit Planned at Frederick Memorial Hospital

Frederick Memorial Hospital plans an addition to address bed shortages and include a psychiatric unit. Dr. Albert M. Powell Jr. said local care works best when patients stay in their community, noting distance to Brook Lane and Montgomery County facilities complicates family visits. The unit may start with as few as 10 beds. approval of related studies remains unsettled. The committee also approved a $64,000 appropriation for Way Station, though the agency sought about $222,000.

First men astronauts chosen for space travel

A US space agency announced on Monday the selection of four astronauts for a space mission. Lichtenberg and Merbold were chosen as payload specialists from the technical staff at Marshall Space Flight Center. Beene Dekale, a Dutch scientist, and Michael Lope of UC Berkeley will join as ground support crew and serve as alternate payload specialists if a principal crew member cannot travel.
