Tax Bill Wins Group Backing in Washington
A $4.1 billion stop gap tax bill won Senate House conference support in Washington and heads to President Truman by Friday night. The pact ends a deadlock, allows adjournment after November elections, and lays groundwork for a second installment tax rise to fund Korea war and armaments. The measure increases individual income taxes by about $3 billion annually from Oct 1, raises corporate normal taxes by $1.5 billion, and backs a future corporate excess profits tax. It also rejects a 10 percent withholding on dividends, and imposes new taxes on TV sets, quick-freezers, and slot machines while speeding corporate tax payments to boost revenue.$
