Maryland education chief proposes Free State grants for poor students
Maryland Higher Education Secretary Shaila Aery unveiled a plan to shift 24 million dollars in state aid toward Free State grants aimed at poor and minority students. The program would supplement up to 40 percent of college costs above poverty, create a part time student scholarship, college savings bonds, a math and science corps, and a public service partnership. The commission and legislature must approve, and funding would rise about 14 million dollars beyond current programs.
