Old National Road history and fate in American travel
A Baltimore Sun writer recounts the Old National Road from Cumberland to Wheeling, its rise as the nation’s first major highway, and its decline with the spread of rail. It traces construction, notable travelers like Henry Clay and Andrew Jackson, and the late 1820s policy shifts ending federal internal improvements.
