Wilkesbarre Pa Sept 19 President Mitchell denied reports he prepared a demand to end the coal strike and sent it to J Pierpont Morgan with a note saying the offer would stand until Oct 20. He said nothing about the claim. Separately strike leaders arrested two deputies and two miners for issuing certificates to non unionists. Clark Tunnel Coal engine house burned in what is believed incendiary fire, near Taylor washery. Governor Stone appointed Norris S Barratt to fill Pennypacker’s vacancy in Commonwealth court.
News from Sept 19 reports Lieutenant Peary and crew aboard the Windward returning to North Sidney after four years of polar effort. The Times reports Lord Salisbury, the former British prime minister, is bedridden in Switzerland. An English and a Swiss doctor attend him while his London attendant is summoned. He has been touring health resorts in Southern Europe for weeks, and his health has gradually declined. Visitors in Switzerland have seen him riding a bicycle.
Indianapolis Sept 19 Willian J Bryan aboard Big Four No 2 struck a yard pane at New Jersey street crossing. The engines pilot was smashed but no one was injured. Bryan held an impromptu street reception as passengers evacuated. He declined to discuss Henderson withdrawal, saying he would in the next issue of the Commoner.
The annual meeting of Baltimore and Ohio Railroad officials and employees opens at Deer Park for two days. About 200 officials from across the system attend for a schoollike session with lectures on railroad topics by prominent figures. General Grant sails home after commanding in the Philippines and Texas actions during the war department updates.

Rochester Sept 19 William Jeffries a 40 year old Charlotte man who tended ovens in a local casery fell headfirst from an opening while repairing machinery. He plunged into hot cas and died almost instantly as flesh baked to the bone and skin browned like crust.
In Greensburg Pennsylvania on September 19, Frank Strasser a loersnith who had been absent for months returned home and shot his wife leaving a fetal wound. Strasser is believed to have a long-standing illness that may have resurfaced, with authorities noting his prior stay at a lunatic asylum.
