In Scranton on September 20 a large gathering drew about 7,000 miners, women, and children amid a strike, with leader Mr Mitchell stating no settlement proposal would be made without striker approval. Dickson City hosted a major demonstration earlier, described as one of the biggest in the area since the strike began.
The report notes two consignments totaling about 8,000 tons of anthracite from Swansea Wales. A British steamer Glencoe left Swansea four days after the Devonshire, with orders from Wales for hundreds of thousands of tons and contracts for immediate shipment to the city for twenty to thirty thousand tons. A second consignment followed in September and a first consignment had been announced earlier. In Atlantic City, Alfred Korie, a New York insurance broker, died after being swept into the surf while bathing. He was stricken with apoplexy.
The queen had suffered for about three years with heart disease and deteriorating health. In recent months her condition had been so serious that little hope of recovery was entertained.

The decision ends the bout in Kentucky and the club faces financial losses as it halts promotion.
At the Shiloh Colored Baptist Church in Birmingham Alabama a stampede at a National Convention event caused by a fire alarm and panic killed 78 people and injured many more. Whites escaped the crush while Black attendees were overwhelmed by a ten foot pileup at the doors. Firemen and police freed survivors as relatives wailed outside. Most victims were women and many died of suffocation with little visible blood. Booker T. Washington and other leaders witnessed the disaster from the stage.
Governor Odell presided at a reunion of the Army of Potomac unit United Cavalry Battery with a major general salute. General James C. Rogers and Colonel Archibald G. Baxter delivered addresses while Odell Murphy and Stone were introduced for brief responses.
Captain John J. Pershing of the Fifteenth Infantry leads American forces at Lake Lanao Mindanao in two battalions of infantry two troops of cavalry and no guns toward the Sultan of Butig seven miles southeast of Camp Vicars. The result is not yet known though cannonading was heard and reports say Pershing may be engaged at Butig.
An explosion at a vaseline peanut roaster beside Charles H Dise’s confectionery in Norfolk, Virginia killed Miss Bessie McGrath of Phoebus and badly injured Mrs. Mary A Palmer of Lawrenceville. The operator’s wife and another woman were injured but not seriously.
Charles F Murphy was elected head of Tammany's executive committee after a 29 to 9 vote amid protests by Frank Goodwin over Wm Devery's credentials. The meeting, attended by most members except August Moebus, also saw a reference to elections and a shift toward individual leadership. Roosevelt visit in Harrisburg sparked crowd interaction with President noting his collection of similar sentiments at home. Transport service cuts ordered between San Francisco and Manila, with several ships reassigned or repurposed for medical use.
Hackensack Sept. 20 Peter Hernia, who killed Butcher Kanter on March 4 last, was hanged in the county jail. In eight minutes he was dead after a violent scene when his wife was kept from him. He broke from guards in the corridor and leaped toward liberty, fighting before officials restrained him.
A prisoner named Gruff faced execution at ten o'clock as ministers led a solemn march to the scaffold. He began a hymn before the sheriff placed the black cap, then the trap opened and he died by hanging. A physician said his death was not very painful.
