Protestant Missionary Decline Masks Rising Overseas Spending

The 1970 North American Ministries Overseas report shows American Protestant missionary numbers down 4 percent from 34,700 in 1967 to 33,299 last year. Meanwhile overseas mission outlays rose 10 percent to 349 million dollars for schools, medical care, evangelism, and aid, signaling a shift from American manpower to indigenous church-led work worldwide. The trend, noted by Edward R. Dayton and Rev. Dr. David M. Stone, suggests Americans are stepping back as indigenous Christians carry on missions.
