The weatherman warns of a freezing night with low temps around 32 degrees. Readings show 30 to 39 degrees across Frederick County including Oakland 30 and Unionville 39, while rivers Monocacy and Potomac fall from recent highs.
The Frederick County Grand Jury returned 25 criminal indictments against 23 defendants this week. Names include Ernest Lee Adcock Adamstown arson Charles Robert Norris Frederick and Lester James Renner Frederick for breaking and entering and larceny. Other indictments cover forgery uttering false pretenses larceny and related offenses across multiple defendants. Three indictments were returned but not yet served. Eleven other people had indictments released earlier this week.
Carl V. Weakley of Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company announced the distribution of more than 38 000 new Frederick County directories began today and will wrap up by next Wednesday. The edition, thicker than last year, adds about 1100 new listings in the white pages and includes a page listing frequently dialed numbers, improved dialing information, and a zip code page between the white and yellow pages.
Mrs Mary B Bryson threatened to go to court if her name is not on the ballot for state senator in the general election. The dispute centers on a new reapportionment rule that limits nominations from a county with less than half the district population in multi county districts. Carroll County, source of both Hahn and Bryson, has under half the district population shared with Frederick County.
AP reports George P. Mahoney widened his unofficial lead after Thursday’s tabulation revisions. In St Marys County Mahoney rose to 3,665 while Sickles moved to 1,170, expanding the margin to 2,638 votes. Official results, including about 3,500 absentee ballots, await counting as machines are opened by election supervisors. Baltimore officials said tabulation would take about 10 days.
Annapolis AP Governor Tawes calls talk of appointing Attorney General Thomas B. Finan to the Maryland Court of Appeals speculative though Finan is seen as a strong contender for the Western Maryland vacancy. Finan declined comment before the judicial committee meets. The vacancy arises after Chief Judge Stedman Prescott retired, with a $25,000 yearly salary. Finan, a Cumberland resident, previously trailed in the Democratic gubernatorial race and has ties to Tawes’s failed bid to move from governor to another post. Tawes notes Maryland Democrats face a tough path to November 8 against Spiro Agnew and independent candidate Hyman Pressman.
Frederick County election supervisors begun checking totals from voting machines after counting absentee ballots. Machines were moved to Montevue Home storage as officials compare reports to totals. Official canvass expected late today or tomorrow. anticipated results 10 percent lower than unofficial figures but no race outcomes likely to change. Absentees: 88 ballots. Democrats 54, Republicans 34. two Democratic ballots blank, two voided, one Republican voided. Finan led Dems for governor among absentees, Goldstein led for comptroller with 43 of 50. Mathias top GOP with 31. Peters no votes.
City readers watched downtown Frederick reaction to new one way streets as drivers faced unfamiliar patterns on Market, West Church, Third, Second and Fourth Streets. Police stopped a confused out of state driver. locals advised to remember eastbound Church and Third and westbound Second and Fourth.
Frederick city officials again tried to sell the old municipal light plant by public auction but failed. The top bid reached 24,500 dollars from Roy Baker, with John R. Cheatham also bidding, yet Mayor John A. Derr opposed selling at that price and favored demolishing the buildings for a parking lot.
City contracts for tires and tubes went to firms owned by two members of the Frederick City board of aldermen. Bartgis and Zimmerman, led by Alderman William H. Bartgis, received 328 dollars, and the Donald B. Rice Tire Company, led by Alderman Donald B. Rice Sr., received 171 dollars. Other bidders included B F Goodrich at 405 dollars and Western Maryland General Tire Co at 46 dollars.
In Ellicott City Maryland a 54 year old laborer Wilson N Layster of Savage was crushed by a 20 foot tall brick chimney as it collapsed during land clearing for the planned Columbia project by James W Rouse Co He and two coworkers had burned a two story farm house whose remains were smoldering when the accident occurred.
Mayor John A Derr proposed municipal cooperation with Frederick Transit Company to buy mini buses for an integrated transit plan. He urged a designated parking area for workers near the downtown shopping hub and buses running every 10 to 15 minutes to shuttle workers and students, saving downtown space and potentially $250,000 for off street parking.
New York stocks moved irregularly in moderate early trading with fractional gains and losses seen among leading issues.
