Leftists May Take Wallace in Party Rift

Washington Sep 15. Speculation grows that Senator Claude Pepper may replace Henry A. Wallace as the left wing favorite in the Democratic Party. At Madison Square Garden Pepper won loud applause attacking McKinley imperialism while Wallace drew boos for criticizing the Soviet course. Pepper’s pro-Russia stance drew outsiders’ attention as Wallace claimed to follow a straight American line. Congressional Republicans urged Wallace’s resignation if he differed with President Truman on foreign policy. Pepper signaled a broader speaking drive, offering services to the Democratic National Committee for October events.
