Community Shows Back by Henry R Shoemaker County Agent
Eleven Community Shows will be held in the county during October and November. Sponsored largely by Local Granges and Homemakers Clubs with cooperation from FFA and 4 H clubs in several cases. Maryland State Fair Board has funded 75 percent of premium awards. Farmers busy filling silos as sweet corn harvesting winds down and field corn cutting begins. This is a busy season with a looming manpower shortage. The crop outlook is strong with record county agricultural production in 1946 aided by abundant rainfall and the efforts of farm families led by Albert and Mrs. Flock of Myersville. Reconversion from war to peacetime farming will require retraining and retooling. farm machinery is scarce and budgets must be protected as prices fall. Increase production efficiency and soil conservation are essential for a prosperous postwar farming era.

Wartime Factors To Continue To Influence Farm Production
Washington report from the Bureau of Agricultural Economics predicts postwar farm output will rise above wartime records by 1950, driven by mechanization gains, better crop varieties, soil conservation, and fertilizer use, with ongoing shifts in land use, livestock efficiency, and new tech such as hybrids and artificial insemination.

Soil Conservation Benefits Seen On Frederick County Farms
County farmer Charles S Michael of near Myersville reports strip cropping and contour planting since 1944 have boosted long term yields. He notes 1944 crops outperformed subsequent years, while a diverted terrace strip produced the best crops yet. The article outlines Penn soil types in the county and erosion issues, plus farmer experiments with disc harrows and green manures to prevent hardpans and improve water distribution. It cites Robert Mathias near Graecham and Melvin Mathias farming 400 acres, with 200 acres strip cropped and plans for terraces. A pond project on the Kelbaugh farm north of Thurmont adds fishing value.
