Corn Reigns in 11 County Census Agriculture Report
Washington reports from the 1945 census of agriculture show corn dominates in 11 counties, accounting for about one third of cultivated land with 211,000 acres harvested in 1944 and a drop in total corn bushels from five years earlier. Wheat and barley yield gains also appear, while potatoes and sweet potatoes decline. Frederick leads in corn, wheat, and barley, with Montgomery and Loudoun high in several crops. A new chemical, a methyl ester of alpha napthtalene acetic acid, may prevent sprouting in stored potatoes and crops.
