Bartholows and Plane No 4 A Maryland Village History
Bartholows is a high altitude village 36 miles from Baltimore and 10 from Frederick on the B and C line near Rush Creek. Founded in the early 1800s and named for John Bartholow, it hosted a large tannery and later a canning factory. Residents pride themselves on war service, a growing public school enrollment, and a neighborhood store led by Louis Molesworth. Plane No 4, on the B and O line, formed around an old engine house and coal chute, now declined but with a church, public hall, and a growing desire for electric lights and a new school building.
