Republicans choose Kansas City for 1976 convention site
The Republican National Committee expected a 7-0 approval as they settled between Kansas City and Cleveland for the 1976 convention. Kansas City won due to Cleveland housing issues, with delegates to be housed as far as Topeka and St Joseph. Cleveland proposed cruise ships and modular housing but some delegates would still go to Akron. The convention will include about 2,200 delegates and as many alternates, with Kansas City aiming to host the midsummer events beginning August 16. Cleveland offered city resources and a Republican mayor backing the bid, while Missouri Governor Bond backed Kansas City and Kansas City leaders pressed for police protection, led by Mayor Pro Tem Richard Berkley.
