Dewey Won't Run Again for Governor in 1950
New York September 7 Gov Thomas E Dewey announced on television that he will not seek reelection this fall. He called the decision the result of a rugged summer and said he would return to private life while remaining active in promoting good government and enlightened policies. He gave no hint of a preferred successor and said Sen Irving M Ives was not a candidate. Dewey pledged to play a campaign role despite stepping down.

Democratic prospects and Dewey’s pending plans
The piece notes Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr and Averell Harriman as leading Democratic hopefuls for a Sept 21 convention in New York City with Mayor Wagner occasionally considered. It also observes Dwight D. Eisenhower’s 1952 nomination role and Dewey’s likely private career options as he completes his governor term. In Ocean City Maryland, Lynwood Duncan was fined for drunkenness and disorderly conduct, with a separate acquittal on tampering with a motor vehicle.
