President Clinton announces a plan to cut and reshape federal programs, aiming to save 108 billion dollars by year end. The effort would shrink the workforce by about 252,000 through attrition, buyouts, early retirement, and retraining for private sector jobs.
A damaged pickup impounded last Wednesday in a hit and run probe was turned over to its owner Saturday. Det. Melissa Oland said lab tests are pending from a vehicle search, with the owner identified as an unidentified Carroll County man. Investigators seek details in the Aug. 22 death of 22-year-old Alexander Folger near Frederick. Folger’s body was found at 5:26 a.m. by a newspaper carrier after a party. Four of five would-be mayors canvassed neighborhoods and shops on Labor Day weekend ahead of the September 14 primary. Jennifer Dougherty stood at West Seventh Street Safeway handing campaign literature in shopping bags. Gary Hughes canvassed South Frederick and Carrollton Drive, reporting several commitments and sign locations. Vincent Mooney Jr. also led impromptu volunteers door to door in Monocacy Village as topics included taxes and police protection.
Egyptian President Mubarak met with Yasser Arafat and said PLO and Israel may recognize each other within 48 hours as mediation efforts by the United States and others proceed. Arafat, facing internal opposition, indicated charter changes are for the PNC to decide.
Beverly Zienda, president of Catoctin Colorfest Inc., leads Thurmont’s 30th Colorfest with about 350 craftspeople and 100000 shoppers. Organizers, in their 14th year under Zienda, prepared since last November, refining operations, traffic, parking, and vendor applications for the two day event. Continued on Page Ad.
