City candidates raise $25,000 in Frederick races
Frederick's five mayoral and 14 aldermanic candidates report campaign disclosures filed with the election board show a total of 25,000 raised as of Aug. 16. Eleven of 19 candidates missed the filing deadline, with three mayoral contenders and five aldermanic candidates late by hours. Mayor Gary Hughes leads with 7,547.75, followed by James Grimes 5,300 and Jennifer Dougherty 4,364. John Norman shows notable small donations, while John Q. Storm drenches northern Frederick County with flooding and outages
A Friday night storm soaked northern Frederick County bringing flooded roads downed trees and power lines and leaving outages in several areas. Frederick carpet dealer convicted in tax theft case
Said Assemi, 44, of Middletown, owner of U.S. Carpet Market, Frederick, was convicted in Frederick County Circuit Court of theft totaling 91,443.73 from the Maryland Sales Tax Division between 1987 and 1991 and faces sentencing in mid October. The case followed more than a year of investigation into unpaid sales taxes on both carpet sales and installations. The state seeks restitution and up to 18 months in jail.
