At a Brunswick hearing Justice J Grahame Johnson fined special deputy M Shellman 20 dollars and costs for assault and battery on H L Shewbridge. Another deputy F W Roth was jailed for trial under Brunswick corporation laws after a drunken confrontation near the canal. Neither complainant was involved with the Brunswick strike.
The Carroll county fair will run September 12 to 15 at Ohler's grove with top horses and cattle entries. Poultry judged by Aaron Fell of Bethesda, swine by J B Deford of Wapas h Ind. Officers include President F A Weybright and VP Wade H D Warfield. fair moves to 155 acre new grounds on State road after this year.
William G. McAdoo, former Treasury secretary, declares intention to seek the Democratic nomination for president in 1924. Wutitey Lyons of Teever confirms Lyons saw McAdoo in Los Angeles less than a month ago and says McAdoo would be in the race this time.
J W Niepold and three sons, long resident in Frederick and now in Washington, built a thriving business making Borghese reproductions. From book ends to hundreds of items, they use a dozen painting and finishing steps, with Frank Niepold gaining praise from critic John Agent.
Frederick MD September 6 Aldermen fix the annual tax rate at 1 on the 100 the same as last year but a Baltimore paper caused confusion by stating Frederick planned a rate increase Brunswick officials had set the rate at 1 but the city intended to decide for next year a slight possible decrease or increase is anticipated. In a separate case Sheriff Moxley and Deputy Gingell found buried whisky near Four Corners Montgomery County arresting George Wright after discovering several quarts of liquor buried on his property. Wright was bound over to Rockville police court on a charge of possessing intoxicating liquor with intent to sell.
A farm dwelling on John McMahon's property near Wheaton was destroyed by fire Tuesday night. The lone occupant, unable to return home, was away when the blaze started and the cause remains undetermined. The building was uninsured and a loss of several thousand dollars is reported.
Fredericksonians enduring an unusual heat wave are promised relief as a local forecaster expects a change soon. Thunder showers are predicted to bring relief with unsettled conditions this afternoon, then partly cloudy skies tonight and tomorrow. The Washington observer forecasts slightly cooler temperatures tonight after a day of 96 degrees and 99 degrees the following day.
Letter acceptances pour in for the Junior Democratic Club harmony dinner set for September 19. Attendees include Governor Albert C. Ritchie and State Senator J. H. C. Legg, with preparations nearly complete to boost party unity.
Clayton Main, 26, Middletown native and Internal Revenue Department field agent, died at Hope Hospital Providence Rhode Island from blood poisoning contracted after a sleeping car accident near an engine derailment. Survived by parents Clinton and ?. brothers Glenn of Roanoke Virginia and Roger of Washington. Funeral Friday at 2 PM at parental home with burial at Reformed Cemetery Middletown.
Francis Scott Key Council No 48 of Order United American Men plans a 26th anniversary observance on Wednesday evening September 27. State Secretary J G Brittingham of Salisbury may attend if railroad delays allow. An old-time experience meeting will be urged to revitalize attendance and share early council memories. The group reports good finances and timely obligations despite low general participation. Arrangements committee members are Lloyd C Miller James N Dobel Thomas R Fox Chester McKenzie and Russell L Strine. The plan will be announced at the September 20 meeting.
Washington union sues U S officials over Chicago injunction. International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and leaders claim the Chicago order has no force in the District of Columbia and seek an injunction pending a hearing before Justice Bailey next Saturday. The suit asserts they acted lawfully since July and learned of the injunction only from news reports.
C Sites and C J Hardman, residents of Highfield, were injured Saturday evening when their motorcycle crashed near Routerville after a passing vehicle struck it. They sustained knee, arm, and facial lacerations, a broken right shoulder, and bites. A motorist transported them to Waynesboro for medical care before returning home.
Stock activity rose in late trading led by equipment utilities motors and textiles as new high share records emerged. Call money reopened at 4 percent and the close was strong with about 900 shares traded. Thurmont man J R Baker injured when his Ford overturned after hitting a culvert. he suffered a broken collarbone and abrasions but is recovering at home.
Mary Smith and Curt Powell, both colored, were arrested by Deputy Sheriff Charles W. Smith and jailed for a contempt of court hearing before Justice J. Grahame Johnson. They failed to appear at 4 p.m. for testimony in Budd Dorsey bootlegging case. Dorsey was also arrested for selling moonshine liquor. Samuel Ocean, colored, was arrested for breaking seal on a box car in Brunswick yards of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. several boxes opened, no theft confirmed.
Lieutenant Belvin W. Maynard known as the flying parson was killed when his plane crashed at Rutland Vermont during the fair. Also killed were Lieut. Charles Wood of Ticonderoga New York and Charles Mionet of New York. Aircraft fell from about 3000 feet. Maynard was an army chaplain and famed aviator who won a cross country race in 1919 before joining aviation and later commercial flying.
Washington reports record coal loadings on September 6 with 33,085 cars, signaling a weekly output of about 10.99 million tons since the miners' strike began. The Tuesday total tops the prior high by 3,031 cars amid continuing disruption. In other items, Miss Sarah Quinn fractured her right arm in a Thursday bicycle accident. X rays confirmed the break.
Charles Bus ard sued Ahlers after a July incident at the Farmers Supply Co. office on Carroll street. Ahlers was found guilty of assault and battery and faces penalty once evidence is reviewed. bail set at 250 dollars. Witnesses included Clarence Bussard, Eugene Kemp, Howard Murdock, and doctors B C Thomas and C H Conley. Prosecution by Anders, Stoner, and Storm. defense by Allanoe and Winebroaner.
The Howard County grand jury indicted William Carter Cronmiller and Marbelie Pease on two counts each of murder and accessory there to for the death of J Bernar Pattison found shot near Savage Maryland. Each accuses the other, with Pease claiming Cronmiller shot Pattison and discarded the pistol in an abandoned quarry. Also mentions Nikirk Farm sale in Pearl near Frederick with a large dairy complex and a separateUnion Bridge transaction.
Washington reports no current negotiations between rail unions and railroad presidents. J. P. Noonan says a Chicago policy committee will review strike policy and potential actions amid Attorney General injunctions. B. M. Jewell travels to Chicago as executives refrain from meetings while leadership discussions remain unsettled.
Nine men were indicted by a Baltimore grand jury for the August 18 murder and holdup of William B Norris at Park Ave and Maalson Street. Walter Socolow Frank L Allers John L Smith Charles P Carey and James Hart are charged with shooting and conspirators include Alles N Blades George Heard Benjamin Lewis and John Novak as an accessory.
Attorney General Daugherty met with Senator Borah to discuss the Chicago injunction against striking railway shop workers. It was indicated the government would not press the provision he alleged that would curb freedom of speech at next Monday's hearing on the permanent injunction.
