Convention Of Legion Ends WASHINGTON convention ends with anti Communism pledge
The American Legion closed its 36th annual convention in Washington with a pledge to combat Communism at home and abroad. Seaborn P. Collins Jr. of Las Cruces New Mexico was chosen unanimously as national commander. He urged a strong stand against Communist infiltration and promoted veteran care, child welfare, and universal military training. The group issued anti Communism resolutions seeking tougher treason definitions, subpoena of donors to Communist fronts, wiretap authority, and deportation of aliens. They rejected coexistence with extremist groups and urged continued UN involvement with caution on world government.

Mahoney vows help for Democratic ticket in November
George P. Mahoney, after two months off the governor race, pledged to campaign for the Democratic ticket as a whole in November. He said he bears no grudge, is a Democrat, and will work to help Byrd’s candidates win. Mahoney had challenged Byrd’s nomination, then quit last week, recalling a similar loss in 1950 and saying he would still support the party slate.
