The News reports Frederick Frederick Jaycees sponsor the Voice of Democracy teen-age orator contest and a Soap Box Derby as part of community events on September 2, 1954.
E LaMar Buckner national president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce toured Frederick county and praised its scenery. He met local Jaycees south of Frederick and visited the Barbara Fritchie candy plant before continuing to Cumberland for a dinner. Buckner outlined year plans and SAL-Starting America's Leaders. He praised local Jaycees youth activities.
Representatives of 150000 young people of the Evangelical and Reformed Church meet in Allentown Pennsylvania to plan the denomination's Youth Program for the next two years. The National Youth Council includes Youth leaders from 34 Synods and convenes biennially to review activities and map future projects. Delegates from Potomac Synod attend with 102 churches across Maryland Virginia West Virginia and Washington DC along with fraternal delegates from the World Council.
Bert Acosta, veteran flier and race car driver, died in Denver at 59 after a two year illness. He began flying in 1910 with a self built plane and later worked as a test pilot and aviation consultant. Acosta faced health and leg injuries, leading to the lapse of his license. he was married twice and had four children. Connecticut officials report their birth records are the most complete in the nation.
