Receipt Reveals Early History of The News in Maryland
An 1885 subscription receipt found by Mrs. Thomas Marcum in Ijamsville recalls the Frederick Weekly News origin. It notes a one dollar yearly subscription from 1885 to 1896 paid by D R Sayler and lists premiums to be given away on December 27 1884. The paper began October 15 1883 and evolved into the Semi-Weekly News by 1888, continuing until 1953. Sayler was her great grandfather, a Detour resident, farmer, and Church of the Brethren minister.
